Product Overview
Jiao Gu Lan (Gynostemma) is a traditional herbal tea plant enjoyed in southern China and other parts of East Asia. Its leaves and tender stems produce a distinctive herbal infusion with a gently bittersweet character.
This roasted Jiao Gu Lan tea offers a deeper, toastier aroma than a lightly processed green-style Gynostemma tea. The roasting brings a warm, rounded character to the infusion while retaining the plant's naturally herbal flavor. It is an inviting everyday tea for people who enjoy traditional Chinese herbal beverages.
Our Organic Grade Jiao Gu Lan is offered as part of Clear Source Herbs' carefully selected range of herbal ingredients, with an emphasis on traceability, responsible sourcing, and quality testing.
How to Use
Traditional Hot Tea
- Use approximately 2–3 g of roasted Jiao Gu Lan for 8–12 fl oz (240–350 mL) of hot water.
- Pour water heated to approximately 185–203°F (85–95°C) over the tea.
- Steep 5–8 minutes, then strain. Adjust the quantity and steeping time to suit your preferred strength.
- For a lighter second cup, the leaves may be re-steeped until the flavor fades.
Longer-Simmered Infusion
- For a stronger traditional-style preparation, bring the tea and water to a gentle boil, reduce the heat, and simmer for approximately 10–15 minutes before straining.
- Enjoy warm, or let the prepared tea cool before serving over ice.
Tea Blends
- Pair with chrysanthemum for a pleasantly floral contrast.
- Combine with goji berries or red jujubes for additional natural fruit flavor and sweetness.
- Try with a small amount of mint for a brighter, more refreshing finish.
Intended Use & Preparation: This is a dried botanical for brewing or simmering as tea. Not intended for direct consumption in its dry form. Strain out the plant pieces before drinking.

Traditional Context (TCM Framework)
In Chinese regional herbal traditions, Jiao Gu Lan (绞股蓝) is well known as a beverage herb, sometimes called “Southern Ginseng” as a traditional nickname despite being botanically unrelated to true ginseng. It is commonly characterized in traditional herbal literature as sweet to slightly bitter and cooling in nature.
Today, Jiao Gu Lan is often enjoyed as a simple tea or blended with other botanicals in seasonal and everyday tea rituals. This traditional information provides cultural context and is not a statement about proven medical effects.
